Catherine Black (she/they) is a Canadian-American director, artist and acting coach in Los Angeles and Toronto. Catherine grew up training for the Olympics as a gymnast, gaining discipline and a command of space. One of Catherine’s first roles as an actor was playing Vanden in American Psycho. Watching Mary
Harron direct was where she first realized she wanted to direct one day. Catherine is driven to tell stories about people overcoming adversity. The main concepts that run through Catherines’ art are empathy and how the unconscious drives characters towards some form of liberation from suffering. Having studied
various acting techniques in Toronto, Los Angeles and the UK, Catherine has a passion for the craft of acting, actors and breaking down a script so each role best serves the story and authentically comes to life. Catherine is a certified acting instructor with Stuart Rogers Studios.

As an actress for 20+ years, Catherine is best known for AMERICAN PSYCHO, performing with Christian Bale and Reese Witherspoon, and starring with Crispin Glover in THE DONNER PARTY (Showtime). She also stars in many Indie Features, has booked countless guest starring roles, most recently “the best Trek
episode of the century” – Ad Astra Per Aspera – season 2 ep. 2 of Strange New Worlds.

Catherine’s extensive practice as an actor and artist has rooted their vision in filmmaking. Known for a strong use of color and bold imagery. Catherine is a proud member of the Alliance of Women Directors. She was lucky to shadow many talented directors early in their career, and went on to produce
commercials, award winning short films and music videos. Catherine wrote and directed the ‘sexy and surreal’ film, DE PUTA MADRE A LOVE STORY that WON Best Director (London IFF), Best Lead Actress (Madrid IFF), and Best Cinematography (Columbia Gorge IFF) along with multiple Jury Awards, Special
Mentions and nominations Internationally. Catherine also wrote and directed GIRL TRIP, a dark comedy that took home five awards and just acquired Worldwide distribution on SHUDDER. Catherine was hired to direct LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED that premiered at the 39th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival and WON Best Drama at 2021 Rock The Shorts Film Festival. She was hired to direct THE TEST – a short film about sisters and bodily autonomy and is in preproduction for THE IRON CROSS, a true story about two young German Jewish boys who barely escape Nazi occupied France, written and directed by Catherine.

Catherine divides their time between Los Angeles and Toronto always working on various projects for both markets, as a director-writer and actor.
